Services - Floor Joists

Engineered Posi-Joist™ Systems

We supply engineered floor and roof joists made to the exact measurements of your project. Every joist layout is designed by our team to suit your spans, loads and services, then manufactured to order and delivered to site ready to fit.

Engineered joists give you longer spans, flatter floors and far easier installation than traditional solid timber, which is why they've become the first choice for new homes, extensions and developments. Every joist layout is designed using MiTek’s industry-leading software, with full EC5 engineering to the latest design codes.

Posi-Joist™

Posi-Joist™ metal web joists

Posi-Joist™ (often searched as pozi joists) combines timber top and bottom flanges with V-shaped galvanised steel webs. This open web design creates a joist that is strong, lightweight and able to span long distances, while leaving plenty of space for services to pass straight through.

Easy routing for services. Pipes, cables, waste runs and ventilation ducts, including MVHR ductwork, pass through the open web without notching or drilling, which saves time for plumbers, electricians and heating engineers.

Long clear spans. Posi-Joists can span further than solid timber joists of a similar depth, reducing the need for internal load-bearing walls and giving you more freedom with your layout.

Wide fixing surface. The wide timber flanges make it easier to fix floor decking and ceiling boards, helping to create a solid, quiet floor.

Lightweight and quick to install. Joists are easy to handle on site and arrive made to measure, so installation is fast and tidy.

Made to measure. Every Posi-Joist is manufactured to suit your design, with the option of top or bottom chord support to suit your building.

Applications & Benefits

Where our joists are used

Our engineered joists are used in floors and flat roofs for new-build homes, timber frame and masonry buildings, extensions, loft conversions, flats and apartments, and commercial buildings. They work equally well in timber frame and traditional brick and block construction.

Engineered joists vs solid timber

Flatter, quieter floors. Engineered joists are more dimensionally stable than solid timber, reducing the shrinkage and movement that cause squeaks and cracked ceilings.

Longer spans. Fewer supporting walls and beams, and more design freedom.

Faster for every trade. Services run through the joists rather than around them, saving time on site.

Consistent quality. Factory-made joists are accurate and consistent, joist after joist.

Efficient use of timber. Engineered joists use less timber to achieve the same strength, making them a more resource-efficient choice.

FAQs

Joist questions answered

Posi-Joists have steel webs with open spaces for services to pass through, while I-joists have a solid OSB web. Posi-Joists generally make running services easier, and I-joists can be trimmed to length on site. We can advise which suits your project.

Posi-Joists are made to measure for your building, so they're designed to arrive at the correct length rather than be cut on site. That's why accurate drawings and site measurements are important at the design stage.

Yes. The open web design makes Posi-Joists ideal for MVHR and other ventilation ductwork, as well as pipes and cables. We can plan duct routes as part of the joist design.

Yes. Engineered joists can be built into masonry or supported on hangers, and they're widely used in traditional construction as well as timber frame.

Yes. "Pozi joists" and "posi joists" are common alternative spellings for Posi-Joist™ metal web joists.
